The other four members were named by sector. Kim Hyun-soo (김현수), dean of the law school at Pusan National University, covers banking. Seo Jun-sik (서준식), a professor of economics at Soongsil University, covers financial investment. Jung Ji-yeon (정지연), secretary general of the Korea Consumer Federation (한국소비자연맹), covers insurance. Commission chairman Lee Eock-weon (이억원) held the appointment ceremony on the afternoon of 20 October at the Government Complex Seoul, according to Newsis, Yonhap and Hankook Ilbo. Lee said the financial environment is changing quickly with the spread of artificial intelligence and digital finance, raising the possibility of new inconveniences for consumers and institutional blind spots. He asked the ombudsman to listen to the field and actively propose ways to improve unreasonable rules and practices. [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 ]

The panel includes two people from consumer organisations, Moon and Jung. The commission said it expects this to let the views of financial consumers and voices from the field be reflected more fully in the ombudsman's discussions. Yonhap quoted the commission as saying Moon would lead the ombudsman on the basis of her experience representing consumer groups. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]

The ombudsman system was introduced in February 2016. Its role is to recommend improvements to unreasonable financial administrative guidance and supervisory actions and to propose ways to resolve the complaints of financial firms and the inconvenience of financial consumers. Newsis, Yonhap and Hankook Ilbo said it has reviewed 333 tasks. Newsis and Hankook Ilbo said 162 were accepted, and Newsis said this included partial acceptance, while Yonhap said the ombudsman recommended improvements on 162. [ 2 , 3 , 4 ]

On the fifth panel, Newsis said it reviewed 40 tasks from August 2024 to August this year and 14 were accepted. Yonhap said the fifth panel proposed 14 improvements to the authorities, including a higher usage limit for teenagers' post-paid transport cards and relaxing the written-consent requirement for the insured when an insurance beneficiary is changed. Yonhap also said everything the ombudsman has recommended or proposed has led to improvements in the system. [ 2 , 3 ]

Why it matters
