Doosan Enerbility said on 20 October that it had signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with LIG Defense & Aerospace (LIG D&A) to develop engines for guided weapons. The companies said they aim to secure the capability to produce next-generation guided-weapon engines domestically and to support technological self-reliance and global competitiveness in South Korean defence. [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 ]
Maeil Business, Asia Economy, Newsis and Seoul Economic Daily reported that the signing ceremony was held on 19 October at Bundang Doosan Tower in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province. Maeil Business, Asia Economy and Seoul Economic Daily said Son Seung-woo, head of Doosan Enerbility's Power Services BG, and Park Tae-sik, head of LIG D&A's Missile Systems business division, were among those who attended. [ 1 , 3 , 4 , 5 ]
Under the MOU, LIG D&A will develop the guided-weapon systems and Doosan Enerbility will develop the engines applied to them. The two companies also agreed to build a close cooperation framework covering the whole process, including engine development, testing, evaluation and certification. Newsis and Seoul Economic Daily describe guided weapons as weapons that use advanced sensors and control devices to chase and strike targets on their own. [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 ]
The outlets said demand for long-range precision-strike systems has been rising quickly in the global defence market, making high-performance engines a key competitive factor. They said the two companies plan to build on capabilities each has accumulated, in guided-weapon systems for LIG D&A and aircraft engines for Doosan Enerbility, to pursue the future defence market. Yonhap, Newsis and Seoul Economic Daily reported that localising the engines is expected to reduce dependence on foreign technology and ease export constraints. [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 ]
Son Seung-woo was quoted by Yonhap, Newsis and Seoul Economic Daily as saying the agreement is significant because it establishes a long-term cooperation framework with LIG D&A, which he said has the best guided-weapon system development capability in South Korea. He said the companies would combine their core technologies to contribute to "technology localisation" in K-defence that can compete in the world market. [ 2 , 4 , 5 ]
Why it matters
The outlets say the companies expect engine localisation to reduce reliance on foreign technology and ease export constraints. The documents give no financial terms or schedule, so the practical impact is not yet stated.
