Tottenham Hotspur beat newly promoted Coventry City 3-1 in a home match at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, in round 7 of the 2026-27 Premier League. It was their first league win of the season after seven games. Yonhap dated the match 19 October local time, while Chosun Ilbo and Newsis gave the 20th in Korean time. [ 1 , 2 , 5 ]
Maddison scored the opening goal in the 14th minute. Yonhap and Newsis said he finished a pass from Mohammed Kudus with a curling shot; Chosun Ilbo described it as a curling shot from outside the penalty area into the top of the goal. Coventry equalised four minutes into the second half through Jack Rudoni, which Yonhap said came from a Tottenham defensive error. Marmoush put Tottenham ahead again nine minutes later, according to Yonhap and Chosun Ilbo, or in the 13th minute of the half, according to Newsis. Substitute Davies added a third in stoppage time; Yonhap said it came from the edge of the penalty area, and Chosun Ilbo said Dominic Solanke assisted. [ 1 , 2 , 5 ]
Yonhap and Newsis said Maddison was making his first start in 1 year 5 months after tearing a cruciate ligament in his right knee last August; Newsis said it happened during a tour of Korea. Marmoush, who Yonhap said joined on loan from Manchester City, scored his first goal for the club. Dejan Kulusevski came on late after injury. Yonhap said he hurt his knee in May 2025, and Chosun Ilbo put his absence at 526 days. [ 1 , 2 , 5 ]
Tottenham have six points from one win, three draws and three losses, and rose from last place to 16th. Coventry are 17th on the same points; Chosun Ilbo said Tottenham are ahead on goal difference and that Sunderland, on four points, are last. Yonhap and Newsis said Tottenham were the last of the 92 clubs in English divisions one to four to win a first league game this season, and that the win was their first in 148 days. Both also said Tottenham spent more than £308 million in the summer window yet had scored only three goals before this match. [ 1 , 2 , 5 ]
After the match Maddison said, as quoted by Yonhap, that he wanted to show what he brings to the team and what it had been missing since his last start, and added that he is 29 with plenty of time left. Chosun Ilbo quoted coach Roberto De Zerbi as saying Maddison is a different kind of player and thanking the fans, who he said had suffered a great deal. A Chosun Ilbo summary credited Maddison's goal and De Zerbi's tactical changes. Chosun Ilbo said Tottenham play away at Chelsea on the 25th. [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 ]
Why it matters
The result ends a run without a league win that Yonhap and Newsis put at 148 days, and lifts Tottenham out of last place. The outlets note that the club had spent more than £308 million in the summer yet scored only three goals before this match.
