Yemen's pro-Iran armed group, the Houthis, attacked the side of the Saudi-backed interim government on 19 October. The interim government announced that a security-related facility was hit by a Houthi ballistic missile. Authorities on the interim government side said a training center was attacked, and that more than 50 people were killed and more than 200 injured, Kyodo reported. [ 3 ]

TBS NEWS DIG, citing AP, reported at least 53 dead and 200 injured. It said the missile landed on a military facility in Shabwa province in southern Yemen. Local authorities said the number of dead could rise further. [ 1 ]

According to TBS, the Houthis acknowledged the attack and claimed that the facility was run by Saudi military officers and that Saudi personnel also died. This claim is not confirmed by the other reports. Kyodo said the Houthis claimed on 19 October that Saudi forces had targeted Sanaa and other places more than 200 times in the previous 48 hours, and that they had attacked an Aramco-related facility in Yanbu in western Saudi Arabia and Riyadh airport. [ 1 , 3 ]

TBS said fighting between the interim government side and the Houthis has flared again since this summer, and that AP described this attack as the one with the most casualties since the fighting resumed. It added that the Saudi-led coalition is also carrying out a large military operation to retake territory from the Houthis, and that there are concerns about further escalation. Kyodo said Saudi Arabia and the interim government are attacking the Houthis jointly and that the two sides continue to exchange attacks. [ 1 , 3 ]

Kyodo, citing Reuters, reported that Saudi Arabia decided to postpone an investment conference planned for October to next year, with a new date to be announced soon. Kyodo said repeated Houthi attacks on Riyadh airport and elsewhere may have had an effect. It added that international conferences and sporting events in Saudi Arabia have been repeatedly postponed or cancelled. [ 3 ]
